Strategic Planning

You may not have a Strategic Plan, just a general idea of where you want to go. Would you like to: Grow faster or move your business to the next level or at least move forward rather than back? Get your employees to understand what needs to be done and then do it? Improve current productivity and profitability? Your company has an excellent reputation. You are experts in your field. You know what needs to be done; it is just getting it done.

Growing your business really doesn’t have to be a constant uphill struggle. You and your employees will achieve more once they know and share the same vision and then agree on the steps needed to realize that vision. You can develop a self-perpetuating process for sustainable results as you focus daily behaviors on those activities that execute your strategy. Sounds impossible? It’s not.

The diagram below depicts a strategic planning model from assessing, defining, futuring and planning on the right to execution, monitoring, evaluating and rewarding on the left. The red arrow on the bottom is where many organizations drop the ball. They spend a lot of money developing their plan and then put it away only to find it a year or so later. A coach can help with the left side of the wheel in addition to assisting with the right.

The center circle of the diagram shows how the process must move from the upper level organizational initiatives to the team and then the individual and then back again. It should be a dynamic process with communication flowing continuously so that there are no gaps and everyone is working toward the same vision without personal agendas.

When everyone in the organization knows where the company is going and the plan on how to get there, the organization will save resources and increase bottom line.

The best way to predict the future is to create it! Strategic Planning is a process that determines the future of the organization and what organizational resources will be needed to ensure success. Strategic Planning involves determining what business opportunities exist, and what resources are available to capitalize on those opportunities.

Business leaders today have found that developing a strategy and a plan is far more effective than leaving the future to chance. Furthermore, the key factors that create higher levels of motivation and commitment continuously fuel higher levels of achievement. Finally, the effective implementation of the plan is as important as planning. This is the true determining factor as to whether or not a company is successful.

The Strategic Planning Processes provide a format for developing a Strategic Plan, taking that strategy through the business planning process and establishing measurable goals. It is a process that involves not only determining where a company is going, but also how it is going to get there.
